BEST DRESSED: INDIA HICKS

I live on a tiny island in the Bahamas, from which I work on the fringes of fashion and the front lines of disaster relief…”

India Hicks, is a humanitarian, designer, author, and mother of five. Best known for her beautiful designs, exquisite books, and philanthropic efforts, India’s natural elegance has placed her front and centre on our BEST DRESSED LIST this year. Here, we discuss India’s fashion choices and new collections…

C&B: “India, firstly – congratulations for appearing on the CITY & BEACH INTERNATIONAL BEST DRESSED LIST 2025! How do you define your personal style, and how has it evolved over the years?”

IH: “I dress classically with the occasional modern twist, but my island life and decorating sensibilities are a strong combination of our traditional British past and our richly flavoured Caribbean present…”

C&B: “Your style does reflect your heritage and we love your new swimwear collection – perfect for summer lounging by the pool. Which other designers have most inspired you, past and/or present?”

IH: “Ralph Lauren. His clothes fit like the proverbial glove; I also have a beautiful cocktail ring designed by Libelula Jewelry which I only take off at night. Growing up under the imposing eye of my father, David Hicks, influenced both my interior design and personal style; he was not a man afraid of colour, whether in his fashion choices or his interiors. Over time, my own style has developed and emerged, though becoming less thrilling and daring than my father’s…”

C&B: “India, you are tremendously accomplished in your own right, and we admire your fantastic styling ability as well – everything you do looks incredibly chic! Regarding your wardrobe, which pieces are your favourites at the moment?”

IH: “Anything from my collection with Tuckernuck that includes twenty four pieces – a person could style themselves as a whole ‘new woman’ with this! And I do love the beautifully crafted tomboy- style of TWP a brand I have worn and loved since its inception…”

C&B: “Yes, everything we’ve seen from the collection looks like a ‘modern classic’! When you think back over the years, which outfit has been your favourite?”

IH: “My wedding dress by Emilia Wickstead and the long embroidered evening gown I wore the night before, designed by Naheem Khan, when we hosted 100 guests in a tent in our field, were worn with Eiffel Tower-sized heels from Christian Louboutin that he made for me…”

A very special evening for me was the launch dinner that Tuckernuck hosted in Georgetown, where they are headquartered. The tablecloth was made from the toile material we had designed together, which hints at my home in the Bahamas and my life in England. I was dressed in a rose gold skirt and a simple white shirt, however I feel a highlight of my collection was that my daughter shone in the Domino Leopard print dress that we had named after her…”

C&B: “Do you have any fashion accessories or essentials that you never leave home without?”

IH: “One of my Tusting bags… I have a new collection that is sleek, sophisticated, and somewhat mischievous – ‘Quiet luxury’ occasionally likes to take a walk on the wild side! I never leave home without the tote, clutch, or handbag, all of which fit seamlessly together. I also will take with me the travel-sized serum from Augustinus Bader and ‘Lip Grip’ by Sarah Creal Beauty – a brand I was recently introduced to, which is a first-of-its-kind line of luxury makeup and skincare essentials for women 40 and older…”

C&B: “We love your classical style but do you ever find yourself incorporating current fashion trends?”

IH: “Only if it’s an extension of a classic design – for example jeans, but with a wide-leg.  Or a beautiful white cotton shirt but with deep cuffs or an exaggerated collar…”

C&B: “What’s your best tip for maintaining a stylish yet comfortable look when travelling?”

IH: “Under pack, don’t over pack…”

C&B: “With your lifestyle, we’re sure you’re ever-conscious of the environment. How do you approach sustainable fashion, and are there any eco-friendly brands you particularly like?”

IH: “I especially love that two of my collaborative partners are serious about sustainability: the British brand Tusting, whose handmade bags combine sustainably produced leathers, and Penelope Chilvers, which offers shoes, boots, and ballet flats crafted by Spanish artisans who preserve rare footwear manufacturing techniques passed down from generation to generation…”
