CORDELIA DE CASTELLANE

More than fashion, it’s the lifestyle that matters. Surrounding yourself with beauty, things you love, while appreciating the simple moments in life. Whether it’s through fashion, decoration, or lifestyle, the key is to stay true to yourself and create a world that reflects who you are…”

Cordélia de Castellane

Cordélia de Castellane is what we’d describe as a ‘natural beauty’, looking equally at home in her flower garden or on Avenue Montaigne. Of half Greek and half French heritage, Cordélia gracefully navigates her life between the picturesque French countryside and the vibrant city of Paris. For the past 14 years, she has been a vital part of the illustrious house of Dior. In addition to her role as Creative Director at Dior Maison, she runs her own company, Studio Cordélia de Castellane, which is responsible for the beautifully designed Café La Perouse (below, left), the historical La Durée on rue Royale, and Restaurant Laurent in the heart of Paris – which all exude an elegant, contemporary, and authentically Parisian vibe. Additionally, Cordélia has decorated the rooms, guest areas, and restaurant of the hotel ‘L’Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay’ (below, right), which is positioned on a magnificent estate just outside of the city. Here we discuss inspirations and the beauty of life in and around Paris…

C&B: “Cordélia, Congratulations on being our magazine cover star this January and featuring on the CITY & BEACH LIFESTYLE INTERNATIONAL BEST DRESSED LIST 2025! How would you define your personal style, and how has it evolved over the years?”

CDC: “I have a very classic style! I like to add a touch of fun from time to time, and I love vintage and good basics. I’m fortunate to have a lovely collection of vintage pieces that I’ve accumulated over the years in various jobs. I’m not very into fashion trends; my style is quite classic!”

C&B: “Which of the great fashion designers have inspired you, past or present?”

CDC: “I particularly admire Dior; I also love old Saint Laurent, all vintage pieces from Emanuel Ungaro, and I have a soft spot for Giambattista Valli, which I adore wearing. The rest of the time, I wear nice basics. I often shop at flea markets. I also really love Label Edition, Shop The One, Laurence Bras, and Destrée.”

C&B: “Paris is often considered the heart of international style. Are there other aspects of French culture that inspire you as well?”

CDC: “My sources of inspiration come from my surroundings, my family, and also nature. My grandmother and her gardens, in particular, had a big influence on me. I’m also fascinated by strong women, women of character who have marked history and continue to inspire my work. My inspiration is often a mix of history, tradition, and modernity.”

C&B: “What’s your favourite piece in your wardrobe – the one item you simply can’t live without?”

CDC: “I have a Dior trench coat that I wear all the time. It’s a piece I love because it embodies both Parisian elegance and the practicality I need in my daily life. It’s perfectly tailored and allows me to adapt to any situation, whether it’s a workday or an impromptu outing. It’s a timeless piece that never goes out of style.”

C&B: “A Dior trench coat is not only stylish but also incredibly practical, effortlessly elevating any outfit while keeping you comfortable and protected from the elements! When you think back over the years, what has been your favourite outfit?”

CDC: “One outfit I remember is a silk Dior dress I wore to a gala in Versailles; it was a vintage dress with a beautiful drape and subtle floral embroidery. Simplicity always works!”

C&B: “Classic, simple Parisian design, much like Dior’s aesthetic, always embodies an effortless elegance! Have you attended any special occasions recently that required you to wear something extra special?”

CDC: “Recently, I organised a dinner to celebrate a new Dior Maison collection. It was a very intimate event, but I wanted to wear a dress that reflected the elegance of the house. I chose a flowing dress with embroidered details that evoked nature, a true ode to craftsmanship that I so admire at Dior.”

C&B: “Nature and gardens are such a great source of inspiration when it comes to feminine design; do you have any fashion accessories on that theme that you never leave home without?”

CDC: “I always wear delicate jewellery, especially pearl earrings and an antique ring that has sentimental value to me. I’m also a big fan of silk scarves, which can transform an outfit or add a pop of color to a more understated look. And of course, a watch is essential in my daily life so as to stay punctual!

C&B: “Can you share any tips for staying stylish while being comfortable when traveling?”

CDC: “I’m all for jeans and a blazer. When the trip is long, I always have a pair of joggers in my bag to change into when I get on the plane, and I change back into a fresh shirt I’ve packed. I always wear easy-to-remove loafers for going through customs. Never anything complicated, no belts – I’m always in a hurry!”

C&B: “What’s your approach to sustainable fashion, and are there any eco-friendly brands you love?”

CDC: “Sustainable fashion is a topic that interests me a lot; I think it’s important to make conscious decisions about how we consume fashion. I try to prioritise pieces made with responsible materials, and I love encouraging the purchase of vintage clothing. Stella McCartney is a designer I admire for her ecological commitment, and I think we all need to take small steps towards more sustainable fashion. I buy quality pieces that I keep and that last over time and I also have items that I’ve inherited from my grandmother.”

I’m not particularly influenced by trends, but I like to subtly incorporate modern elements into classic pieces. For example, I might choose a current colour or cut for an accessory or pair of shoes, while staying true to my love for timeless and well-crafted pieces.”

C&B: “What are the style/beauty essentials you carry in your handbag?”

CDC: “In my handbag, you’ll always find a nude lipstick, hand cream, and a small bottle of perfume. I also always carry a notebook to jot down my ideas, along with a pen that I adore. These are simple items, but they help me stay organised and elegant throughout the day.”

C&B: “Do you have and favourite places to visit or entertain when out and about in Paris?”

CDC: “I love going to the Hemingway Bar at the Ritz (above, left) and ‘La Petite Chaise’ (above, right); I also enjoy spending time in authentic Parisian bistros like Le Voltaire (below), places full of history that I adore…”

C&B: “Thank you, Cordélia, for this beautiful conversation on your personal style philosophy – we’re sure it will inspire many following in your footsteps. Happy 2025!”
